Everton's season so far

Or reviewing how we've done in the 25/26 season

9 January 2026

To preface this I initially planned this post out a week ago at the very start of the new year, but as I'm writing this now it is the Thursday morning after the Wolves game. In that week we've had two pretty horrific games and when it comes to football we all know that emotions and feelings are incredibly fickle. I'm going to do my best to give a calm and measured review of Everton's 25/26 season so far.

Initially, would I say I'm happy? Yes. Mainly because we're not really risking relegation. I know that seems like a low bar but it's the kind of season I'd be desperate for over the past few years. As I'm writing this we currently sit 12th on 29 points, 15 points above 18th place West Ham. It's also worth pointing out that it's quite congested in the middle. If we'd have won yesterday, thos extra two points would jump us up to 8th, and there's only 5 points seperating 5th place from 13th. Everton are certainly in that mix.

How have the signings been? Well the two stand out signings of the season are obviously Jack Grealish and Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall. They always say to never fall in love with a loan player, but thos guys clearly had never had Jack Grealish on loan. He's had a tremendous start to his time at the club. Getting four assists in his first three games and winning player of the month for August is phenomenal. He's taken to the club and fans incredibly well too. It's such a joy to see his creativity on the pitch.

However, I'd say our best signing of the Summer is KDH. A player that clearly was incredibly talented (one of my best mates is a Leicester fan and he sorely misses him) and coming to Everton is great for him to get some game time. He's currently out injured and not having him is a big miss. He's scored several important goals, including that stunning winner against Man U, but he's also been a great outlet for the ball helping us when we win it back.

One of our other big Summer signings, and the most expensive, was Tyler Dibling who we haven't seen much of for Everton. He's still very young and is mostly raw talent with a lot to work on, and that's something Moyes clearly views since he doesn't get much game time. I'm still hopeful and optimistic that he'll come good for us.

I also want to talk a little bit about Adam Aznou who is a player I still think needs to have a chance of playing. He's been given even less time than Dibling. I'm hoping he'll get a fair bit of time and maybe even a start in our upcoming FA Cup match.

There's been a lot of moments where I've felt we stood a chance of getting some European football. I'm not thinking Champions League of course, but getting a shot at the Conference League would be amazing and a good chance for us to win some European silverware. But this past month has shown that we are still a club in transition. Missing Gueye and Ndiaye to Afcon are big misses since they are so important to our play. Also, Gueye is relatively old and Ndiaye is brilliant and so will likely go soon, so replacements for them are very important. We're also in dire need of a right back.

Overall, I'm content with the season so far. It's had some very high highs and some low lows, a big rollercoaster of a season. All things considered, I'll take that.
