Getting back on track
Or getting out of the rut
I had a busy week last week. I was performing in a show on the Friday and Saturday evenings, had to be at tech and dress runs for it during the day, had another show I was staring rehearsals for and had some personal stufdf to deal with at the same time. It was rough. And as a result most of my good habits fell to the wayside. I stopped getting up when my alarm went off and would stay in bed, I stopped doing my morning run or going to the gym, I missed out on my weekly clean, I stopped mediatating and I skipped out on my daily journaling. I even was unable to upload a blog post last week.
The first thing to do when getting into this situation is to acknowledge that these things happen. There have been many occasions where I've had a great run of my habits, and then stopped for a bit. Does that mean all the progress from earlier is lost? Absolutely not! You can't let yourself get lost in this mindset that this failure means anything more than a simple break in a good routine. Everyone will go through an instance like that.
The second thing to do, is to get back to the good habits. Sometimes this can be starting with small things and building it up again. Hopefully, it should be quicker and easier this time round to get to more advanced versions of your habits. For me that involved getting up at 7:30am this morning, with the hope that I can soon make that earlier. I went for a small run first thing, and hopefully soon I can extend the lenght and distance of that run. I had my breakfast in my living room where there's more natural light and I'm not sat at my computer watching nonsense on YouTube. Having doen that, I found it easier to sit down at my desk and actually be productive with my personal projects. I was able to push myself to go to the gym.
I've had a relatively productive mornign and I hope to continue that in the afternoon. Rather than getting into bed and having an afternoon nap, I should continue with my projects and read some self-improvement book as well as some regular reading. I may make some time to work on a video game part that I'm stuck on and make progress to completing that.
Failures happen. Streaks are broken. Today is the first day in getting back to good habits and an improved life.
